Series vs. Okotoks

We had close games vs. the Raiders all season. They skate well and work very hard and both goalies are good.
Game one we played really well. Totally dominated first period but didn't score. All the 4 goals were score in less than five minutes at the start of the third. No one scored in the 3-3 OT and we lost in the shootout.

Game two we again dominated but had trouble scoring. Outshooting them by about 20 shots again. Reese made a critical save on a breakaway and we held on for a 2-1 win.

Game three was hard fought. It is always hard to eliminate a desperate team. Some of our players looked really tired and didn't have as good a game. Hannah was really solid in goal for us and Ashley had a great game scoring two, giving her 4 in the series.

Overall we played really well keeping them to only 5 goals in 3 games. Our mantra is always 3 or more GF and 2 or less GA gives us a great chance to win.

Most of the chances we game up came from ill advised strong side pinches and allowing their weak side winger to get behind us for a stretch pass. Out forecheck is a 2-1-2 with a pinch on a rim. We should be closing the gap on the strong side winger but not pinching. We will review this in practice this week.

Red has a hard working team and plays the same style as Okotoks tut they have more scoring talent. We are 2 W, 2 L against them so far this season. So it is a very even match up. Their philosophy is to chip the puck out and win the loose puck in the neutral zone. They go hard to the net and like to work the puck low and pass to the point for a shot and they battle for the rebounds. It isn't pretty but it is an effective way to win.

So the girls need to put their work boots on and out compete them. We have done it before and will do it again this weekend.

Second last practice of the season. We had the lines work together in the drills and games. Pictures at another arena before and then rush to get on the ice within 45'. Only about a 15' drive, so it got done. One more practice Tuesday then the 455 km 5 hour drive to Lloydminster on Wednesday morning to the Provincial tournament.
Five teams qualified. We play two games Thursday then one each Friday and Saturday. Top 2 play for Gold and next 2 for Bronze on Sunday.

2024-25Season

We started off with a conditioning camp mid August then tryouts. 8 teams of 20 played two games then 6 teams were chosen and they played two games, next 4 teams of 20 played two games and the coaches met with GHC and drafted three teams. I drew choice three. We went from the list we made during tryouts and drafted 25 players then had to cut down to 20 and the extra 5 players were affiliates. We focused on good players from good families.

Started with ex games vs. White and Red then the Fire Starter tournament. Next the Kelowna tournament where we played 6 games in 4 days and won the championship. Our 31 game season started and we played each Southern division team 4 times and Northern division once. We flew through the first half winning most games and then had a lull after the Christmas break then got it going again at the start of the playoffs. Totally dominated first game vs. Okotoks but couldn't score and lost game one then took game two and tree. We were 2-2 vs Red during the season but played great defense and great goaltending and won both games 2-1 to advance to Provincials.

Five stop time 60' games in four days is really hard. We lost to Red Deer 3-1 in game one then played a second game vs. Edmonton and though we controlled the game we had trouble finishing but hung on to win by a goal. Some players were really tired and not playing well so we had to shorten the bench Next day we played Grande Prairie who are big and have some of the top F and D in the league. We beat them 4-1 in a game they really had trouble against our Torpedo forecheck. Last game of round robin was vs. Lloydminster with winner going to gold medal final. They struggle solving the Torpedo and the games was evenly played but they gave up 5 breakaways that we didn't convert and ended up losing by a goal.

Grande Prairie again in Bronze medal game. They figured out the Torpedo and broke out up the middle and it worked because we were forechecking two deep instead of the second T covering the centre. They were flying the zone and getting behind our D. I got Cassie to meet with the D to explain how to deal with them stretching and we shut that down. Period two we went back to our 2-1-2 with a pinch on wide rim and started paying better and got the lead going into third. They really pushed in third but we scored to get up by one then got lucky with a stretch pass to McMillan as she came out of the penalty box and buried it to give us a two gaol lead. They got one but we held them off for the win and the Bronze.

I really enjoyed coaching these girls and having supportive parents, which makes coming to the rink fun.

I want to thank our coaches, Jim, Emily, Cassie, Mila and AT Kayley, Cam for doing the stats and our great managers Shelley and Grace.

I head to Victoria Tuesday to play in an old guys tournament and see shat real lowers look like. We plan to have our Transitions camp July 2 to 6 at Flames arena again this summer. It will be for girls who played U15 this season and U13 girls who are moving up to U15.

Thanks everyone,
Tom
