Diary of a Season 2023-2024

Over the years some coaches like to see the practice plans and situations that happen during our season. This year Jim and I along with two of our former players Emily and Mila are coaching a U15 AA girls team that competes with other AA teams in the Province of Alberta. It is the highest level for girls this age.
We just finished watching 160 players in 8 teams play two games then it was cut down to 6 teams, then 4 teams. There are 3 teams in Calgary and we send our rankings to the coordinator who compiles them and sends out the names of the players who move onto the next round of tryouts. We had a 3 team snake draft where we drew first pick and chose to draft forwards first, we got the D second and G third. So F first round went us getting the 1st, and 6th pick. D draft we got 2nd, and 5th and G 3rd and 4th. We now have 15 F, 8 D, 3 G and have to get down to 11 F, 6 D, 2 G in the next ten days. Players not chose will be affiliates along with others we can name from the division below us.

Our first two practices are tonight, and tomorrow and we play two ex games on the weekend.

During the season we practice two times a week and usually play two games. We will also be in some tournaments.

What I see is a huge physical development gap between 09 and 10 players. The extra year of growth for many of the 09's is evident in size, speed strength and most of all confidence.

Players skate and handle the puck really well. Some have good shots but generally shooting is a weakness. Getting the eyes up and making plays right away needs a lot of work. They really work hard. So our task is to change the offense from 1 vs. 5 to 5 vs 5 and to create 2-1's on both offense and defense.

We will start working on those things tonight and for the next 7 months.

Let the season begin.

Agility skating with shots
FH and BH receiving – shoot while moving
Nzone regroups x 3 – point shot
Teach back pressure and back tracking
Game emphasizing back pressure
Speed scoring – 2-2 contest

Exhibition Games
Played our first exhibition game with a strong lineup and it looked like the other team went with their bubble players. Won 8-0 and play again tonight with all of our bubble players and sit girls who scored 6 of our 8 goals. We have to cut down to 19 players by Thursday.
Second game was 4-5. We had about 60% of the play. Now we don't practice for 4 days and we have to send 6 players down. The game reshuffled two of our decisions. I will look at the video one more time before Thursday. We are AA and tryouts for the A team start on the weekend. (No AAA U15 girls in our Province) So they have a good league to go to.

U15 Fire Black Practice 09-14-23

Lots of game situations with an agility skate and shots then neutral zone regroup and shots followed by a cross ice tournament of 2-2 then 4-4 with three games at once. We played a full ice 2-2 to 4-4 then 3-2 to 5-5 transition game and finished with a full ice game requiring at least one pass in each zone.

We had to send 5 skaters and one goalie down to the A division, which is hard on both players and coaches. Players send down went through 4 stages of reduction from 160 to 57, so they played really well to get this far.

We now have 11 F, 6 D and 2 G. All players sent down are affiliates who can practice with us and be called up for games.

Team U15 Black Practice Plan - 09-14-23 - Time: 16:30-17:45 Arena: Max Bell

Notes:
- Agility skate with puck and shots
- Tomas regroup with shots 2-0
- Tournament 3 net 4-4 cross ice with modified rules
- Continuous 2-2 – 4-4 and 3-2 - 5-5 Transition game
- Full ice at least one pass in each zone
- Cheer in the middle.
------------------------

U15 AA Black Practice Plan Date:09-16-23 Time:18:00-20:30 Venue: Bowness
2.5 hr ice time. Flood after 75' and met in room to go over overload-slot set power play with the magnetic board. Players had snacks and oranges.
Lines: Notes:

Parents meet coaches 5:30
Long strides – cutbacks
Edges and balance
Russian puck handling with shots
Machine gun pass and shoot
Stick on puck –
Swedish angling drill
Defensive zone skating
Coach Jim go over pplay in dressing room
Group at each end practice overload
Bob Johnson PP game at one end
Full ice pp – one player in nzone
2/3 ice game – regroup with Jokers below net
---------------------------
Exhibition Game vs. Red Deer
Red Deer finished second in the division last season with a 17-9 record. Region produces a lot of really good players.
We dominated the first outshooting them 12-3 and firing 3 golden chances over the net, but 0-0 after one. Second was basically even but we scored 1-0. Third we took 3 penalties, and they had an edge in the play. Lots of goals and final was 3-3.
Ice plant broke down so we got scrapes instead of floods and the ice was really soft causing some players to fall when pivoting.
Game showed that when we play with high energy we are very good. Early with only one team practice so far and haven't worked on much. Breakouts, defensive 1-1's are a priority. Two of our D got hit in the head. I sat one after the first. Other D didn't tell us she had a headache until end of the game. Will have to see if two affiliates can play if doctor says they are concussed.
Next week W-Th-Sat practices and play on Sunday.

Fire Black Practice Plan - 09-23-23 - 12:00-15:15 - Mount Pleasant

Notes:

Team picnic outside of rink
Go over high press pk with magnetic rink
Carry puck and shoot High low shooting
Small horseshoe
Point shots
3-0 behind net – east – west – slot - shot
2 pass games – forehand only pass - plays start from below goal line
PK walk through
Specialty Team Sequence
-------------------------
Exhibition game on Sunday vs. Airdrie/Olds north of Calgary. Led 3-1 after two and didn't touch puck first 5' of third. They tied it 3-3 then we started playing well again and won 6-4. Two PP goals and zero against, so the specialty team practice probably helped. Results so far 3-3 and 6-4. So we are scoring but giving up too many.
Still early.
Up to 9 games the next two weekends. One tournament in Calgary and other we bus to Kelowna, about 7-8 hour drive.

Fire U15 Practice 10-3-23 and 10-4-23

U15 Fire Practice 10-3-23

Assistant coaches couldn't come so Cassie Campbell helped. Two goalie coaches were there. Kids hockey usually doesn't have enough players to do a lot of things I coached with college or pro teams and we always have at least 12 F and 8 D. I invited 2 extra D and 1 F which gave us 12 F, 8 F and 2 G and allowed me to expand my practice scope.
We just played 4 games in a three day tournament last weekend and leave Thursday morning on the 8-9 hour drive to Kelowna (detour around construction in Golden) for a 5 game tournament. So team play is a focus for this weeks two practices.
Beautiful drive through the mountains starting with Banff National Park and into British Columbia. Kelowna is in the Okanagan Valley which is one lake after another with vineyards and orchards on each side of the highway. So a lot nicer drive than through the Prairies when it is -30 and snow blowing across the highway.

Date: 10-03-23 Time: 20:15-21:30 Arena: Crowchild
4 Lines of 5:
Notes:

Skating warm up
Cutbacks Overspeed
Power Play Penalty kill
Middle drive
Small HS with Middle Drive
Multiple one touch passes
Reilly pp game

--------------------
Fire Black Practice Plan Date: 10-04-23 Time: 19:00-20:00 Arena: ECTAS
Notes:
In 5 games it is a good chance we will kill 5-3 or have a 5-3 pp. We also may be in a situation where we pull our goalie. I want to introduce how we want to play these game situations so we are all on the same page.

Striding and tight turns
Zig zag x 2 – 3 shots-3 passes – agility skate
1-1 and 2-1 with regroup x 2
Low spread pp
6-5 offense –
Goalie pulled 5-3 pk
Reilly pp game

Start of Season
Two really hard games where we got great goaltending and dominated the slot. Won first vs. Southern Express 2-0 and second vs. Red Deer and won 6-1. Gave up too many shots in both games but not a lot of clean ones from the slot. We continued to score on the rush and working the puck low.

I applied for a few tournaments about three months ago and got windows with no games. We went to a different tournament so don't play for two weeks. We have six practices before our next game and intend to use them to work on passing and receiving, breakouts, gamp control and basically everything else.

Fire Black Practice Plan - 10-21-23 - 10-22-23
Time: 19:30-20:45 Arena: ECTAS

Lines: 12 F, 6 F, 2 G
Notes: Cassie Campbell was guest coach and worked a lot with the D. 1-1 with D no sticks is a great way to teach body focus and D side. Small horseshoe is the best pass while skating and receive drill I have come across. Low plays are very effective to create offense.
Plan
Two pass–Back skate–Scooter blades on ice
Small horseshoe – 1-0, 2-0, 3-0
Shot then angle check at each end
1-1 defense with no sticks
Fwd – 3-0 pass east west behind ant to slot
D puck retrievals
Forwards 3-3 quick transition – low plays - Tom, Emily
Défense – point shots with deception at point - Jim, Cassie
10 shot shootout contest
-----------------------------------------------------
We had a 2.5 hr practice and used it for a lot of team play i.e. PP, PK, 6-5

Fire Black U15 Practice Plan 10-22-23 Time: 16:15-18:45 Arena: ECTAS
Lines: 11 F, 6 D, 2 G
Notes: 2.5 hr. practice – introduce 1-3-1 PP - Diamond PK - 6-5 attack
F and B stride – pull back-push out- push-pull
Goalie instruction
Wally breakout sequence – goalies pass
B6 3 zigs – F-B-Crosby-Puck on FH only

Swedish one timer sequence x 4 – pairs - goalie instruction one end
Full ice 4-4 – 2” game – goals on one timers

Flood- Go over 1-3-1 pp Diamond PK and 6-5 with magnetic board in room -

Fire Black Practice 10-30-23 - 11-02-23

Fire Black Halloween Game 10-30-23

We had a Halloween game on Monday night before Halloween. Players dressed up and had some treats before. We played two 25' periods and kept score on the main clock. Lots of fun for the girls. We did the a skill warm up the first 15' with striding, cut backs, small horseshoe and the Dizzy which I pasted a video below.

B6 - 3 Shots, 3 Zig zags, 3 Shots
B400 - 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 Pass Every Zone
2’ game Russian scrimmage
Power play pk sequence
Continuous 3-2 to 5-5
Shootout puck carrier either direction

Split on weekend, 3-2 vs Fire White and 2-3 vs Raiders. League has a lot of good teams. In our loss to the Raiders we got hemmed in by the pinch on both sides. We focused on the wide wing slashing then stretching. This deterred their D from pinching and we went from 0-3 to 2-3 and had a lot of other chances. We will stress that in todays scrimmages as all the teams in our league pinch a lot.
We are mixing up our lines to see if helps a few of the players.
Travel to Edmonton on Saturday for a game. Come back after and practice again Sunday.

Fire Black Practice Plan Date: 11-11-23 Time: 19:45-21:00 Arena: Bowness

We had intense skill practice on T-Th with a lot of competition. We play Sunday and did a lot of teaching the pp, face-off play, pp breakout. Started with skating and puck handling for the first 17'. The Bob Johnston power play game is a great way to practice team offense. Like most teams in this league the team we play relies on one or two stars to skate thru everyone and score. the 1-1 drill having D with no stick prepares them to play tight gaps and stay D side.

Notes: 10 F – 2 G – 6 D

Striding, moves, cutbacks, linear crossovers
Agility skate and shots – transition - Crosby
Double Cross and drop and shot
1-1 gap control defender no stick
Jim/Emily Power play review
Tom Johnston pp game – rotate each 5’
Double swing pp breakout
Face off play – offensive
Specialty team sequence -pp vs pk
Team cheer in middle

B6 – 3 Shots, 3 Zig-zags, 3 Shots – U17-20 RB - U15 G

Yiikes it was an interesting weekend. We were 15-2-1 overall and 5-1-1in league with only 11 GA. We were awful in every aspect on Saturday vs. an undefeated team who we beat in an ex game. They humiliated us 9-1.
Sunday we had a 2.5 hr road trip to play in a small town. Got there and the rink people told us they had a tournament on and we didn't play. We contacted the team only to find they had forgot to let us know the venue was changed to a city an hour away. Luckily 2:45 start. We loaded the bus again and played. It was 1-1 with 10' left and we got one, then another and scored into the empty net for a 4-1 win. Two tough games next weekend.
We have decided to teach the team the Torpedo. I used it a lot before and is a solid way to play. We want to have the 1-2-3-4-5 Total Hockey and the Torpedo in our skill kit. Tomorrow I will introduce it at practice.

December 12-19 Practice - U15 Girls

I had Emily one of my assistant coaches run the session tonight to get some experience before she gets evaluated for her next coaching level. I just took video clips of each activity. I think she did a really good job. Our next game isn't until Jan. 6 so it was a skill and game situation practice.

Played two games on the weekend and both we had our goalie pulled at the end but took reaching penalties and we were on the kill instead of 6-5.
Girls worked very hard and we had a breakaway on the pk but goalie made an nice save. Outshot and out chanced Red the first game and had a strong first and third vs. Red Deer but some high zone turnovers the last 3 minutes when it was 3-3 gave them 2 x 2-1 and they scored on both.
We will continue to develop everyone and give them a chance to play in all situations and become better players and enjoy coming to the rink.

* Game vs Red Deer. Girls worked really hard but we turned the puck over too many times when they pressured. They send two on the puck and one the other side to pressure any D to D. The ways to beat it are for the D to beat the first checker and pass up, a quick share with the low and slow C. Pass to the W who taps to C or jack hammers to the D who follows the pass.
We got 30 shots and had a wide open net when their goalie pushed the net off and did that three more times when we had pressure.
Most of their chances were because we made bad passes or passes bounced off our stick to them. Players were in the right place as far as team play goes. The first goal we allowed them to walk off the wall and get a shot. We were there, we just didn't pick up or man. 13-14 year old girls make mistakes.
We are playing all of the top teams in the league now and have decided to manage the bench more.

------------------------------------------------
Played Rockies the second best team in the 12 team league. We were going to wait until end of January to manage the bench a lot more with the priority to Win then Develop. Up to now our priorities have been Development and Winning. We changed our lineup to 4 lines, 2 scoring and 2 checking. Instead of 11 F and 6 D we went with 12 F and 5 D. We also used our top offensive players on the pp. All 4 lines rolled when it was even strength.
I met with the D and C's before the game to go over low D zone coverage and the C being low and slow on the breakout. Jim met with the W''s.
We have two elite D. One is high risk, high reward and the other low risk, high reward. They each played about 25'. The other 3 D do a good job. This made a huge difference. Second period we changed our breakout to fly the zone if D had control and toe caps up ice. Our wingers have been much too static and easy to pinch. This change drove them off the blue line and opened up our offense. We outshot them 20-11 in the second and scored three. It is how we will play going forward. We are good enough to beat every team in the league.
Played a really good game winning 5-3 and scored 3 goals on 4 power plays.

------------------------------------------
Just one game this weekend vs. Raiders. Exchanged chances but we won 3-2. They throw everything at the net and try to use their size to put in the rebounds. They did this once but we scored on two rebounds. We did a lot of good things. Next week we play the two other Calgary teams. Always a good rivalry.
Raiders were 15-5 before this 6 game losing streak vs the top two teams and us. We worked on breakouts to beat the pinch and did a pretty good job of it. We also plugged up the slot with the wingers down to the hash and didn't allow very many clean chances.
We are getting scoring from many players now who didn't score before Christmas. All of the skill work and game situations in practice look like they are paying off.

The Hockey Prayer - Jim started doing this before our games and the players love it.

Two games on weekend vs the other two Calgary teams. First game vs. Red. It was close with shots 39-40. They scored on their chances and got some bounces and we hit a few posts. 3-5 loss which easily could have been a win. They forecheck 2 on the puck and we need to make the first pass really quick on our breakouts.
Second game vs. White. Outshot them 53-20 but needed OT to win 3-2. Late PP the ref stepped in front of our D going back for a puck and knocked her down. They got a breakaway and tied the game 2-2. Goalie stoned us as we totally dominated in all areas. Our top centre got a concussion on a Scott Stevens type hit and will miss games next weekend.

Good 4-2 win vs Calgary Red on Saturday. Checked really well and our defensive 1-1' were really strong. One D Grace got pushed into the boards from behind and has an ankle sprain. Missing three F's, one in a speed skating competition, one sick and another on concussion protocol. Strong goaltending and we went D-D a lot and used a wide rim to get away from their two man pressure forecheck.

Another 4-2 win vs. Airdrie who are first overall in the 12 team AFHL standings. Solid goaltending and incredible work ethic. Our defensive skills on 1-1 battles didn't allow them a lot of clear shots. We scored another 4 goals. That was our last home game of the season. Next week we go north for three games and finish the season with the next weekend on the road with one game vs. Southern Alberta.

Jim ran the practices this week. I was there Tuesday but got sick Wednesday and missed Thursday practice and all three games on the weekend. I watched them on Flohockey and got the Instat game reports.

Lost game vs. Lloyd 3-5. It was even but at 3-4 with 3' left we took an unneeded tripping penalty and they scored instead of us having a chance to pull our goalie. We generated as many or more scoring chances but missed the net a lot.

Game two vs Sherwood Park we dominated getting 45 shots but didn't score enough. It went to OT and we scored a goal but got pushed into the goalie and the ref disallowed it. They got a breakaway when our D went in deep leacing a player alone behind her who got a pass and was gone. Played really well.

Game three vs. St. Albert we again played really well, lots of passes and many scissors during the weekend. Won 5-2.

Jim has done a deep analysis with Instat to see who plays well with who and we are creating lines for our last game and the playoffs. Calgary Red and Okotoks are fighting for third place and we play whoever finished fourth. We have beaten both in our last game.
