Using the Game to Teach the Game
I am attaching the USA manual on games as well as games from our program.
The USA manual quotes my Finnish partner Juhani Wahlsten on the first page.
If coaches and associations learn how to use games effectively in practice then three things would automatically happen.
1. The players would love to practice.
2. Activity ratio would increase dramatically (they move all the time in games).
3. Players will get better under pressure and be more creative when they play.
Juuso and I have been promoting this concept since 1985 but it is a hard sell in a culture where the old fashion 'command style' teaching is dominant (we threw it out in the school systems in the 70's). Soccer is totally evolving into using games and the Europeans have always used games during practice. The USA has passed Canada in development of creative players on both the men's and women's sides mostly because Americans tend to be more open to the idea of using games to teach the game, especially at the younger age groups.

Spanish Hockey Tour
Great hockey tour of Spain. Barcelona, Pamplona, San Sebastian, Vitoria, Madrid, Castelldefels and home. We played ex games in Barcelona, San Sebastion, Madrid and a tournament in Vitoria. After every game the hosts had a party for us. 23 people in all. We rented large vans and traveled in them. I took my wife and a daughter and they had a great time. Lots of touring and socializing. We were playing teams with average ages about 15 years younger but were competitive.
A great life experience.

Gene Reilly is the coach giving instruction to the Red Bull players. I coached with him that season. Gene is a top skills coach and was in the AHL working with the Senators team for two seasons and his main assignment was to teach Jason Spezza how to play when he didn't have the puck.
This video is often used to show how Crosby school's Spezza but instead it is a great example of how to play low 1-1 defense. I think it is a great example of stick on stick from the D side, hand on the hip, stick always on the ice. Spezza prevents Crosby from getting to the net and at that time Crosby was the top player in the world. Spezza denies the slot and then stays with Crosby after he passes. The goal is on the winger who allowed the shot from the point and not on Spezza who did a fantastic job.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PZD7cldytKI&autoplay=1
All could see Crosby call a set face-off play in the Stanley Cup Final overtime game. He won the draw, Penguins scored and game over. There was a lot of crying from San Jose fans that Crosby cheated, which every centre tries to do. (The saying is 'If your not cheating a little then your not trying hard enough.') Mike Cvik, who just retired after 29 years as a linesman plays hockey with us and I asked him what the rule is. He said that starting last year the rule is that the centre in the defensive end must put his stick down first. It used to be the visiting team. This video shows one face-off defensive win and breakout and 3 options for an offensive win.
-------------------------------------
T2 - Face-off Win Plays – Pro
Key Points:
Face the puck at all times. Be ready to shoot quickly. Always screen the goalie.
Description:
1. Defensive zone face-off win. Inside D1 get puck and reverse to wide D2 who skates behind the net and pass to W or C. Weak side W stretch through the middle. Walk through with each unit.
2. Offensive zone face-off win one. Wings switch sides. Win back to the point, D skate down boards and pass back to inside wing who skates back to the point – shoot.
3. Offensive zone face-off win two. Wings play strong sides. Win back to point. Inside wing F1 rotate up the boards, C F3 to front, and F2 to high slot. D to F1 to F2 who shoots.
4. Repeat win one to D who skates down boards and pass back to F1 who covers the point. F2-F3 screen and tip in front.

I constantly update these folders with new drills and coaching ideas.
There are over 1200 pdf/s of hockey drills and games and drill lists from teams at almost every level and from most of the major hockey playing countries. Also some other coaching ideas and list of drills etc. The drill pdf.s can be saved and printed and most have a video link that shows the drill. The purpose of this site is to help coaches plan practice with the most current information available from top coaches. It takes 2-3 hours to prepared each PDF so it represents a lot of work.
There are over 200 videos I still have to write up and make PDF's. They are in the video folders and coded in the same way. New material is posted the Daily Drills and added to the Dropbox, and then to the playlist on YouTube. So the links above are constantly updated.
You can sort the drills by name, date, etc. You can also use the search function at the top of the screen to find drills. i.e. type in backchecking, or breakout, or BO and it will find the drills with that name.
I use the Technicoach Word template to plan practice to send to my assistant coaches and keep a record. I have attached ice example below. This site doesn't allow Word attachments but the template is in the PDF folder.

T4 - F3 Mirror-Backpressure-F1-F2 Points-5-5 – Pro
Key Points:
This is the way many elite teams now forecheck and backcheck when the opponents make a clean breakout. Players must be able to count to 5. 1 and 2 forecheck deep, 3 mirror from the mid slot, 4 play midpoint and 5 the puck side point. These positions are all interchangeable and the five players stay compact like a flexible 5 on a dice.
Description:
1. Offensive 5 players set up for a breakout.
2. Forecheckers 1 and 2 deep at the goal line, 3 mirror puck mid slot, 4 midpoint, 5 strong side point.
3. Offensive D1 skate behind the net and breakout pass to the W or C.
4. 3 mirror the puck and back pressure the pass receiver.
5. 1 and 2 back track through the middle lane.
6. 5 cover the W or C skating up the ice on his side.
7. 4 skate backward and pick up the deepest attacker wide or in the middle.
8. 3-4-5 cover one attacker each when attackers enter the zone with control.
9. Defend the house with one on and a box behind. 3-4-5 low, 1-2 points.
* When D pinch F3 covers the point instead of back pressuring the attacker. This happens on all rims and slow developing D to D behind the net breakouts.

D - Games Manual - 2019
The main goal of this website and our ABC program has been the same concept. Use drills to introduce techniques and good habits and learn to put them into game situations. I have prepared two PDF's about using games in practice. both PDF's have lots of examples of games that you can use.
The first PDF is the Games Manual including guides to using the ice efficiently, games to teach the game, progression of games from our book and supplementary games.
Games Manual - 2016
The second PDF lists may games with diagrams and links.
D - Games from the ABC’s of International Hockey - 2016
It would be incredible to see kid's actually 'Have Fun' at practice while learning game understanding and creativity. Maybe the days or the 7' - 11' of moving and the rest waiting in line or listening to the coach are finally going to end.
Mike Sullivan - Player Development and How They Learn.
Stanley Cup champion coach gave a talk at a USA coaching symposium and did a great job explaining the science behind how humans acquire skill and refine it so it is physically automatic and the brain recognizes game situations and quickly solves them.

C - Game Situation Drill Manual - July 2016
I have posted a few hundred drill PDF's since the last manual. There is a lot of pro material plus the Russian and Czech U20 teams were here for a mini tournament vs. two teams from here.

The B Drill Manual is too large for some phones and tablets to open, so I have broken it into Drill Manual 1 and 2 which is posted below.
B - Partner and Team Drills Manuals 1 + 2 - 2019
The Manuals are posted below.
T1-T2 Teaching Individual and Team Offense Manual 2019

Practice Video Clips on YouTube
This is a list of the drills I have posted on YouTube. Only the drill PDF's that I have written up in the last half year have links to the YouTube video, so this list has links for the YouTube video for the PDF's that I posted earlier. Everything is coded according to the ABC system of teaching which is designed to make finding practice ideas a lot easier. The idea is to compliment the drill manuals.
