T1 - D Point Shots-F Scoring-C Face Offs – Pro

Key Points:

Players go to skill stations led by coaches. Forwards who take face-offs in the middle. Defense shoot at one end. Forwards at one end do in tight scoring drills. Defense face the play when skating sideways to shoot. Head up to read the checker. Make one touch passes for the one timer shot.

Description:

1. Coach pass to point-D1-Skate and pass to D2-D2 skate down lane-D2 back to D1-D1 shoot from mid-point.
2. Coach drops pucks for face-offs in the middle.
3. F1 cut in or go around the net and shoot, then screen the goalie for F2’s shot.
4. Coach pass to D1 who passes across to D2 who shoots. Alternate sides.
5. D1exchange passes with a coach at mid-point then slide and shoot.
6. D1 progress to exchange passes then slide without a puck and one time D2’s pass.
7. Coach rim the puck from the far corner; F1 pick up the rim and cut in or go around net and wrap.
8. Coach pass to D1 from mid-point; D1 across to D2 for a one timer.

T3-C600- Angling 1-1 x 2 - U17

Key Points:
Steer the attacker wide. Keep the stick on the attacker stick. Angle from the back of the inside shoulder and if you are able skate through the hands, lift stick, take puck and seal attacker off with your body.

Description:
1. Players start at diagonal blue lines.
2. Player on the outside starts with a puck and skates towards his net and around far pylon.
3. Defender starts on the inside and mirrors attacker skating inside the far pylon.
4. Attacker drive for the net and try to score.
5. Defender surf from the inside and steer, angle and finish.
6. If there is a shot fight for the rebound.

Key Points:
- When the goalie is square to the puck he has the advantage.
- Imagine a wall between the dots as the ideal shooting area.
- Preserve space by skating laterally and not straight at the goalie.
- Make the goalie move.
- Hit the net and follow your shot for a rebound.
- Shoot where the goalie is coming from and not where he is going.
- On forehand skate laterally and shift weight to the inside leg.
- Off wing push the puck out and skate laterally to shoot.

Description:
A. Players start from the corner and hash marks on each side.
B. Player 1 skate a tight turn to the outside and pass to 2 in the corner.
C. 2 return the pass.
D. 1 preserver space and slide changing the shooting angle.
E. 2 Shoot and follow the shot.
F. 3 and 4 repeat from the other side.

* Avoid crossing hands on the forehand tight turn. Instead move the hand back and to the side.

T2 - D1 – 4-4 – Offensive Playing Concepts with Darryl Belfry

Key Points:

White and Red vs. Grey and Black.

- All 4 attackers must constantly move to support by getting open, screening, setting picks.
- D must be involved in the attacking zone or it is a 2 on 4 and not a 4 on 4.
- D skate hard between the dots at the blue line. Make offensive rather than possession decisions.
- Defense continuously create a forward angle on the forecheck and don’t simply back up.
- Turn to beat pressure. Support the puck by setting picks and screens.
- Play together and not a 1-1 game but turn it into a 2-1 game.
- Play fast on offense instead of slowing down.
- Use change of speeds with the puck and without the puck.
- Pass and quickly jump up to support the attack.
- Short passes allow close support and long passes to static players puts them on an island alone.
- Speed of the attackers needs to be faster than the speed of the defenders.
- Nine of ten shots will be stopped by the goalie and the players skating the fastest will get the loose puck so skate fast on offense.
- As soon as the puck is shot everyone is on defense and winning loose pucks puts you onto offense.

Other Attack Concepts

- Always face the puck.
- Give a target and make eye contact.
- Take three hard strides to open ice when you get the puck and then skate hard to join the play.
- Skate at the net when shooting and follow your shot.
- Stop at the net for rebounds or possible passes.
- Use scissors to confuse the defense.
- Attack with constant cross over skating,
- Take the puck to the 'Big Ice' between the dots whenever possible.
- Use deception: fake passes or shots, look aways, change of pace.
- Always have a 'Lead Dog' going hard to the net and stopping without the puck.
- Screen and 'take the goalies eyes away.'
- Keep your stick free not letting the defender tie it up.

Description:

Play full ice 4-4 in a controlled scrimmage format and the coach stop the play to teach or review offensive or defensive concepts.

Pro Practices x 2

Description:

Both practices show how coaches have moved away from constantly going to the whiteboard. They simply call out instructions on drills that the players already know and change the situation or stop them for instruction or correction. Players move the pucks to the next starting point not assistant coaches and the coaches are involved in giving passive pressure or better still communicating with the players in line.

To kick off 2023, Aaron Wilbur welcomed Pyry Lukkarila, Head of Coach Development for the Finnish Ice Hockey Association, onto the Glass & Out Podcast. The discussion centred around why coach education must always precede player development, why nothing is accomplished without good player-coach communication, and why alignment is critical to an effective development process.

1. Offensive play begins as soon as you gain possession of the puck

“This is a simple sentence, but it has a whole lot of things in it. This isn’t just for the puck carrier, it applies to every player on the ice, whether it’s small area games or the real game.”

2. The puck is always faster than the player

“Of course that’s the case. But what does that actually mean? That’s where a lot of our secret sauce is.”

3. Offensive play requires depth and width

“I’m not going to get into this one. There are some important elements to this that really mean something to us and how we see the game.”

4. The player with the puck should move towards open space

“The open space here means coming off the boards and into the centre of the ice. You want to move to where you have options to your left and to your right. Open space might be the wrong word for it, but it’s thinking if I get a puck along the boards, how can I get myself and the puck into bigger, open ice so that I have more options and can make a play.”

5. If your teammate moves towards you, move towards an open area or lane

“This is basic invasion sports stuff.”

6. Players without the puck should find open space

“This is making things happen without the puck.”

7. The player with the puck should always try to move over the next line

“This is something that doesn’t necessarily happen all the time, but it’s more of a way of thinking that you want to get closer to the net that you want to score on. So this is something concrete for kids to try to get them thinking that way; try to move towards that next line. It’s more a principal thing.”

8. After crossing the offensive blueline, two players should drive hard towards the net

“This rule used to have one player driving to the net hard, but now I’ve changed it to two players. This is important.”

9. Goals are scored from the goal-scoring area

“We’ve got zones one and two in front of the net, the goal-scoring circles, where most goals are scored.”

10. Defence starts as soon as the puck is lost

“We all know this one.”

“Like I said,” Lukkarila added, “these are nothing fancy. The fancy stuff comes as a result of these things happening.”

Fancy things are happening in Finland, as a matter-of-fact, because of Lukkarila and how he has played a key role in reshaping Finland’s coach education system. If you look at the recent string of international success by a country of just under 67,000 hockey players, it’s clear that his work is paying off.

In the past three World Championships, the Finns have captured two Golds and one Silver. The previous eight World Junior Championships have resulted in three Golds, one Silver and one Bronze. And in the past six U18 World Championships, they have brought home two Golds, a Silver and a Bronze.

Is it because of the Golden Rules? We can neither confirm, or deny this. But we do understand why Lukkarila is guarding the exact recipe to his Finland’s hockey secret sauce so closely.

Description:

Angle and Stick Lift
Approach at back shoulder, inside leg in front, skate through the hands, lift stick, take puck and escape with hard strides to open ice.

Box out attacker going to the net.
Skate backward between attacker and net with a tight gap. Seal attacker stick to the outside to prevent tips and block their way to the net, tie up attacker stick so they can't get rebounds, then look for the puck.

Description:
1. F1 forecheck to far blue line.

This is a great video of the Tomas Neutral Zone Continuous Regroup. Tomas Pacina a Czech coach who spent a lot of time in Calgary and has worked with numerous NHL and National teams from various countries. These skills transfer directly to games situations. You can ad D to D, D scissor etc. as well as have 1-3 or 3 F.

Description:

1. D1-D2 pass to F1-F2.
2. F1-F2 regroup with D3-D4.
3. F1-F2 forecheck vx. D3-D4.
4. F3-F4 support D3-D4.
5. D3-D4 make a regroup pass to F3-F4.
6. F3-F4 now regroup with D5-D6 and forecheck.
7. Continue the regroup and forecheck sequence.

* Add dump in, breakout with a low 2-2 where the attackers forecheck to get the puck and score.

* Use one or two D and from one to three F. A great way to practice quick regroups and if you dump the puck in the breakout, forecheck and on the regroup the neutral zone forecheck.

Key Points:
Give a target, face the puck, pass and shoot while skating. Call for the puck and attack using linear crossovers. Look for a rebound after you shoot. then circle out and rebound for next shooter or screen and tip.

Description:
A - 1 skate toward middle dot and turn back.
B - 2 pass to 1.
C. 1 skate across and pass to 3.
D - 3 skate to middle lane and pass to 1 on boards.
E - 1 skate in and shoot-rebound.
F - 2 repeat sequence by pass ing to 3 who shoots from the other side.
G - 1 can give and go with 2 or circle out and rebound or screen and tip.

* Finish with good habits and follow the shot for a rebound.

* After shooting the player can screen, circle out and rebound for the nest shooter, give and go with the next shooter.

* Another option is to defend a 1-1 either aggressively of passively with the next shooter.

Key Points:
Players line up on each side, blue D with R forwards and at the other end R forwards with B defense. Start by F's weaving thru neutral zone passing and then regroup with their own D. D hinge and pass up to the forwards and follow the play up the ice. Three new forwards follow and regroup with two new D and attack the original D 3-2. Follow this flow end to end.
You need at least 8 D and 12 F for this drill. Use the same flow with less players i.e. Regroup with 2 F and attack 2-1.

Description:
1. Red forwards 1-2-3 weave passing puck thru neutral zone.
2. Red forwards regroup with the red D 1-2.
3. Red D hinge and pass up to the forwards.
4. Red F attack 3-2 vs two blue D.

Key Points:
D pick up a puck in the circle then pass to a wing on one side, get another puck and pass to a wing on the other side, get a third puck, pivot and pass to a coach in the offensive zone, skate to the point and get the puck back, drag and shoot. Forwards face the puck and give a target. Defense make crisp wrist or snap passes while skating. Forwards focus on keeping the stick blade square to the pass, especially on the backhand.

Description:
1. Forwards at the blue lines and defense in the middle.
2. Defense at each blue line skate forward - get a puck.
3. Forwards from diagonal side skate up to the red line and pivot for a pass.
4. Defense each pass to a forward on the opposite wing.
5. Defense repeat by skating back to the blue line and up to get a new puck.
6. Defense now pass to a second forward who pivots for a pass on the other wing.
7. Forwards skate in and take a shot then follow the shot for a rebound.
8. Defense get a third puck, pivot at the blue line then give and go pass with a coach and take a point shot.
9. First forward screen and second circle back to rebound for the next shooter.

Key Points:
Play a 1-1 in each corner with F using escape moves and D mirror and pin. Supporting F pick up the loose puck, skate behind net and pass to F on other side. Defender keep stick on ice and on the puck, maintain net side, pin player with free hand on hips and drive knee between the legs. Supporting forward stay out of the battle on the D side. Pick up the loose puck.

Description:
