DT100 - Continuous 2-1 - D Join Attack – Pro

Key Points:

One puck game. If the puck is dumped out regroup and attack again. This transition game can be played like a continuous drill with the new players giving passive support. Another way is to play as a game and the new forwards help defend deep in the zone and the new offensive defenseman is part of the attack. So it is just an efficient was of changing lines on the go. This is the most game like practice drill/game a coach can use. Basically you can create any numerical situation or isolate team skills like the breakout and forecheck by making the attacking team dump the puck in. This video has the new players giving passive support. Examples of active and passive support full ice.

DT100 - Continuous 2-1 and 2-2 - Detroit
https://youtu.be/eUVJXyP_cSA

DT100 Continuous 2-2 Passive Support - Prospects
https://youtu.be/sk4z4ul7rao

Description:

1. Attack 2-1 and two forwards give support to the D and one D follow to support the offense.
2. Defending team break out 2-1 and the D join to make it a 3-1.
3. Two defending F and one attacking D follow the play into the zone.
4. Make a 2-2 by two F and two D joining the play and one D be part of the rush.
5. This flow can be done from 1-1 which would make a 2-1 on the rush.
6. With a D joining a 2-1 is a 3-1 rush, 2-2 is a 3-2 rush.

T2-4 – D4 – 1-1 – 2-2 – 3-3 Coverage and Attack – Pro

Key Points:

On defense play man on man with the guideline closest right on the puck carrier, second within a stick length, third closes half way. On offense try to win the 1-1 and create 2-1’s with scissors and give and go passes and move puck behind to the other side. Rotate so F3 mirrors the puck ready to shoot. In this video only the F take turns on the attack but in Total 1-2-3-4-5 hockey everyone should attack and defend. Everyone must communicate. Defensive skating, stick on stick and sticks in passing lanes are the focus.

Description:

1. Everyone is at one end of the ice.
2. Three forwards are spread around and one F and two D are ready to defend.
3. Coach pass to one of the attackers and he tries to score 1-1.
4. Whistle after about 5-8” and the coach pass to another F and now it is a 2-2.
5. Whistle and the coach pass to the third forward and they play 3-3.
6. Next group of 3 attackers and 3 defenders spread out in the zone.
7. Do this sequence until every forward has had a turn defending.

* For safety pass the puck to the coach on the whistle or pass it out of the zone, stepping on loose pucks causes a lot of unneeded injuries.

Hockey Coaching ABC Program to Develop the Complete Player - Enjoy the Game

ABC Hockey Development Progressions - Age Appropriate for Beginner to Pro

Youth sport to some is more of a job than an enjoyable experience. It is a real art to run effective hockey practices that players both get better and have fun.

Finnish legend and IIHF Hall of Fame coach Juhani Wahlsten developed a program based on how we progress from a baby to a toddler, adolescent, teen ager, young adult and up. Each phase of maturing has a style of practice that matches natural development. Juhani was a great player and coach and also a physical education teacher. He asked me to work with him many years ago. I am also a physical education teacher and was an ok player who is a student of the game. We have developed this program as hockey playing physical education teachers.

The program is based on the Finnish organizations principles of the Four Game Playing Roles and the Three Game Situations.

Two themes of the program.

‘Enjoy the game.’

‘The GAME is the GREATEST coach.’

First two years A-D
A - individual skills.
D - Games to teach the game.

Year three and four A-B-D-E
B - Partner and team skill vs. no opponents.
E - Shootouts and contests.

Years five and six A-B-C-D-E-F-O
C - Game situation drills starting with 1-1.
F - Skating for fitness.
O - Off-ice training.

Years seven and eight A-B-C-D-DT-E-F-G-O
DT - Transition games practicing game situations.
G - Goalie technique.

Years nine and ten and beyond A-B-C-D-DT-E-F-G-O-T1-T2-T3-T4
T1 - Individual offensive technique.
T2 - Team offensive skills.
T3 - Individual defensive skills.
T4 - Team defensive skills.

At about U14 focus more on T1-T3 but introduce T2-T4. As players get older there is more focus on the team play in T2-T4.

ABC Philosophy is Based on Human Natural Development

Designed by Juhani Wahlsten to be age appropriate.

* This is a general guideline with a realization that there are early and late maturers and the coaches have to adapt their teaching to the group they have and to groups within the team.

Year 1-2
Young children think of themselves and their family and want to play. Individual skills of cross ice skating, shooting, passing techniqe, puck handling drills to introduce technique and games and tournaments during practice that focus on these skills plus good habits like facing the puck lay the foundation of skill and love of the game. At 70% the practice is games.

Year 3-4.
Progress to full ice skating. Introduce more group passing in the next stage with at 60% the practice games and contests.

Years 5-6
Previous skills are reviewed in game situations and skating with and without a puck full ice and around the circles is still a focus. Add game situation drills and training that practice coordination and agility are. Games 60% time.

Years 7-8
Children’s focus turns to their friends and transition games have them working on games situations together. 50-60% of practice is games and transition games. Passing drills have more players and practice gamelike movement.

Years 9-10
Players now have a solid base of skating, individual skills, how to play situation like 2-1 and good playing habits.
Team play is appropriate and refining the skills with T1-T3 individual offensive and defensive skills drills will make things automatic. In all of this remember that hockey is a GAME and at least half of practice should be learning by doing in game situations vs. Opposition. Drills should be done under pressure from a defender or in overspeed with time pressure.

These are links to ABC coded manuals and files of the drill and game video and pdf's that have a diagram and description. The manuals start with the philosophy from the original ABC of International Hockey book along with suggested drills and then list the practice ideas added since the book was published.

* Feel free to use any drills or games that accomplish the same goal of making the players better.

ABC Coded Manuals

A-B-C-D-DT-E-F-G-O-T1-T2-T3-T4 manuals.

Each manual has the principles of training and many on ice examples for all levels.

This is a link to pro practice ideas I have collected from the last ten or so years. They are organized and coded in the ABC system to make them easy to find if you understand the code (like books are organized in a library.)
The letter tells what is being worked on and the number tells where on the ice. i.e. B6 means passing or partner skills vs. zero opponents starting from the corners. B600 start from the four blue line. B4 from the middle circle. Title tells what is being worked on.

Skill Development

A-skating and individual skills.
B-partner skills and passing
C-game situation drills
D-Games to teach the game.
DT-transition games to work on game situations in free flowing.
E-Shootouts.
F-skating for fitness.
G-goaltending

T Advanced Technique - Details of the Game

T1-individual offensive skill.
T2-team offensive skill.
T3-individual defensive skill.
T4-team defensive skill.
T2-4 team offense vs. team defense.

SAIT W Trojans - Fall Camp 2020

These are video clips of the on and off ice games, drills and fitness activities we did at fall 2020 camp. Because of the Covid Pandemic about 1/3 of the team didn't come to Calgary and stayed home and took their courses online. About 14 players were at camp. Our arena was closed and Peak Power where we do off ice was closed as well. We adapted by renting ice at the Crowchild arena and trained outside at Optimist Park. I took short video clips of about 60% of what we did on and off ice. It is a good record of who was there and the type of training we do.

Our regular practice time is late afternoon and early evening and that is how the players organized their class schedule. We had a lot of 2:30 practices which conflicted with online classes or players doing their practicum and working all day. Most players could make the evening session but a few had jobs they had to be at.

So we did the best we could and the camp gave the players a chance to skate, train and meet their teammates. We were planning a training camp with everyone mid-November but the government shut all rinks down and it never happened, so we have about ten ice times we haven't used yet and hopefully we can do something in the winter semester.

T2 - PP Breakout Pass Back and Rugby – Pro

Two power play breakouts.

Breakout One has 4 F and 1 D

Coach dumps the puck in and forechecks. D1 pick up the puck and skate up the middle. F1 stretch to the far blue line, F2-F3 on either side of the near blue line, F3 follow D1. D1 pass to any of the other 4 players. In this example pass to F2 across to F3 and back to F4 who carries up his strong side with option to pass across to F2. Enter the zone and run a pp option.

Breakout Two has 2 D and 3 F

D1 get puck, D2 swing to strong side corner, F3 to weak side. F1-F2 stretch on both sides. D1-D2-F3 fill each lane and attack. F1-F2 come back to attack five across with F1-F2 in the widest lane. Usually enter wide on the defending F side. Run and option.

Repeat with first group.

Mike Kennedy, who I coached with at SAIT men and women is now coaching pro in Japan. He is a former NHL player. Mike put together some YouTube clips from the IIHF U20 Championships that show how the game is being played now.
Really good stuff.

T4 - Defending a 2-1 and 3-1 - Terry Johnson

I asked Terry Johnson his views on defending a 2-1 and 3-1. Terry coaches the defense on our team and played in the NHL as a defensive defenseman. I also coached with TJ at the U of Calgary men's team.

Defending 2 v 1

- Defense delay the play as long as possible to create bad shooting angles and allow time for backcheckers to come back. Defense to take pass away and defend the strong side post at the same time (i.e. not allowing puck carrier to come into the shooting lane where they have a bonafide chance to score). Defence only slide when puck carrier is a threat to the net and the play is deep enough such that the attacking player cannot simply skate around the goal side of the sliding D . When sliding the Defense slides to both (1) take the pass away and (2) not allow the puck carrier to cut into the middle of the ice. Blocking a shot is a bonus, only to be attempted if the first two priorities are looked after. (Against players on their "correct side", shins should be aligned with the puck and body and stick aligned with the attacking forward's body to not allow the cut in.) Defender slides feet first back towards his end but outside the post, to avoid interfering with the goalie.

Defending 3 v1

- much like the 2 v 1, Defense take the lateral pass away and defend the strong side post at the same time. If on the 3 v 1 the puck is moved to the trailing player, the D can jam the trailer if the attack is deep. Defence can slide on a 3v1 in similar circumstances as the 2 v 1. When sliding on the 3v1 the D slides to not only (1) take the lateral pass away but to also (2) to take the pass to the trailer away. As with the 2 v 1 the D also slides to (3) not allow allow the puck carrier to cut in.

The reason I asked the question was the drill I posted showing a pro team working on sliding. This is the posting. So the question was about the read the D needs to make and the technique.

Hockey is a Game of Transition

Transitions in a hockey game. High level teams will get the puck about 180 times each in a game. About 35% of the time a team is on offense, 35% on defense and 30% of the time the puck is loose. Watch this video from the IIHF World Championships and look at the circle in the corner. Green Canada on offense, Red Canada on defense, Yellow loose puck. On average the puck changes hands 6 times a minute at the highest levels.

Players constantly change transition between offense, defense and loose puck situations.

On offense they either have the puck or support the puck and on defense they check the puck carrier of cover away from the puck. Loose puck situations the closest players race for the puck and teammates have to read whether to give offensive or defensive support.

Video Examples for Developing Defensemen

These are video links. If a coach wants the description, diagram and saveable pdf then copy the title and paste it in the search function at the top right side of the page and it will take you to the posting.

On some devices and some video players the ABC site video comes on but doesn't play until you click on it's screen. Often life isn't perfect. Sorry about that.
