DT100 - 2-2 Offensive Point Support - U18 F
Key Points:
Face the players when explaining the drill and hold the white board in your hand instead of talking to the glass. In transition games the new players can be either passive or active. Learn the flow of the game by first giving passive support. Forwards and defense play the point so everyone learns how to defend a full ice attack. Making the point players active works on point shots, boxing out, screen, tip, etc. Having only two colours works well when doing a lot of game situations. Leave from the red line on each side.
Description:
1. Full ice 2 on 2 and the offense gets support from two players at the point.
2. Start with a 2-2 attack and the two reds attack two blue defenders.
3. Two reds follow from the red line and give passive point support.
4. Play a low 2-2. Shoot in pucks that come to the blue line.
5. On a goal, frozen puck or clean breakout the blue attack vs. the reds at the point.
6. After one rep each switch to having the point active limited to going as far as the top of the circle.
7. Point players can now pass or shoot. If puck is just dumped out in neutral zone then regroup.
8. Play this transition game 1-1 to 3-3 or send out from 1 to 3 and the players must read the new situation.

Wally Kozak - Defensive Skating
Wally Kozak worked with elite Bantam and Midget players at the Edge School for Athletes. I came along and took video for him. He has prepared these videos.
T1 – Skating Mechanics – Wally Kozak – Edge Boy’s
https://youtu.be/YSkQIHBmpjQ
http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20170605112440692
Wally reviews principles of efficient forward and backward skating.
Edge Prep - Backward Stride Progressions
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPzAL0Z-0xM
Highly Skilled players focus on Progressive drills to master their back ward stride. Progressive Deliberate practice focuses on proper technique. Players learn as they progress from slow to game speed. Developing Individual Tactical Skills is a primary focus for a Hockey Academy. This ice session will provide coaches and players some ideas that will translate into improved game execution.
Edge Prep Practicing Pivots
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S452_n9muQI&t=42s
Skating the game requires deliberate practice of specific tactical skills essential to playing 1 on 1 situations. The Backward stride and Mohawk pivots are essential when playing a rush. Teaching these skills in youth hockey would benefit execution and enjoyment at any level.
T1 – Efficient Skating to Maintain the Defensive Side
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkh88y3S_P8
The 2 foot stop and cross over start are good conditioning exercises that have little value during the game. When a player has to put the brakes on at full speed they likely over skated the situation. To Skate the game defensively the player has to control their inside edges to control their speed and direction according to the game situation. Practicing snowplow stops and using a front foot stop and T start will improve game skating, helping players to always face the puck carrier and maintain D side. Dave King's Teaching cue was "toe caps square " to the puck carrier.
Edge Prep - Handicap Horseshoe Progressions
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4H4T-tY5kc
One of he best drills to teach Defensive players how to SKATE the 1 on 1 RUSH. Initially the D play an attacker with their hands behind their back keeping them outside the dots. Maintain a good gap. The D progress to hands free, Stick Turned over to Stick Normal o master "skating" the 1 on 1. Progressive deliberate practice for Transition skating, Back Ward Striding and Pivoting is necessary to master those skills that will improve game performance.
Edge Prep - Rush Race Drill
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86ErvN0Ds84
The Edge school Prep team learns from a Rush Race Drill. Coaches learn how to explain the drill so it can be executed to accomplish it's purpose. This National Team drill reveals the need to spend more time on Backwards Starts and striding. When the 1988 National team began this drill the defensemen started on the Dot and struggled. In the last half of the season all D could start at the bottom of the circle and keep the defender on the outside not allowing a dangerous shot.
Edge Prep - D Zone Scrimmage 1vs 1> 2 vs 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVf4QOrhWro
Game Like Practice practice is an opportunity to test one's Individual Skills and Hockey Sense. The foundation to performance is Individual skills. The importance of maintaining D side and the tactical skills required are revealed in this video.

Boston University and U18 Girl's Practice the same principles.
BU D Monday's (This drill from BU compliments Wally's instruction.)

Boston University develop Defensive tactical skills with deliberate practice. Time well spent. At younger age players need to taught these special skills in a progressive fashion.
Defensive Tactical Skating U18 F
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vWAoCm2vwE
The importance of Defensive tactical skating is demonstrated by a number of breakdowns i Defensive 1 on 1 play. Progressive Deliberate practice in this video will help coaches of ALL levels to develop Tactical Skating Skills important in Defensive hockey.

DT400 Attack-Defend-Breakout-Rest – U.S. College Players
Key Points:
The defenders have to clear the zone with control of the puck. With situations over a 3 on 3 I would move the resting players back to the far blue line. These College players are lined up at the far blue line waiting to attack. This was a camp I helped former NHL player and coach, Curtis Brackenbury with near Boston in 2013.
Description:
1. Players line up within a stick length of the red line if you have 2 groups or only ½ ice; otherwise behind the red or far blue line.
2. Three players attack three defenders.
3. Defenders must carry the puck out of the zone before passing to team waiting team mates.
4. Three new players attack vs the original offensive players.
5. Keep score, implement skill (only forehand passes) or team play rules (goals originate from below the goal line).

FYI: (In Jihlava, Czech Republic, 90' from Prague, I was there to do a hockey camp. Petr Svoboda a former Toronto Maple Leaf was the only coach who spoke English. I went over the practice plan before the ice and then he explained them to the other coaches at the camp. Petr has been asst. coach for the Czech U20 team the last five or so years. There was also a training camp in the evening for the pro and U20 teams. I mentored Petr and showed him this and other transition games that he ran on the ice while I watched from the restaurant. They offered me a job as coach mentor after the camp.
I watched Hannu Virta and Kalle Kaskinen run the spring practices for the TPS Turku team. This is where the Koivu's and Kipprosoff com from. I was visiting Juhani Wahlsten in Turku.)

Strathmore Rockies vs. Minnesota Whitecaps - WWHL
I ran across the video of this game and thought my former players would enjoy watching themselves when they played the game at the highest league level at that time. This game was played in Rochester, Minnesota. The Whitecaps won the Clarkson Cup in 09-10 and only lost two games all season. We beat them 2 out of 6 games.
They had 9 U.S. National Team players and we had Delaney Collins and Samm Holmes who have played for Canada and Kailey Hall who played on the U22 team. The rest of each team all played college hockey.
The Western Women's Hockey League folded after the next season and now Calgary has the Inferno who play in the Canadian Women's Hockey League, who play teams in Eastern Canada and the USA and next year there will be a team from China.
I have attached the game day program with the Whitecaps line-up. I thought it was a well played game.
They got an early lead and we came back for the win. We are the team in White.

E1 – Random Battle In Low Slot – Youth
Key Points:
Defender must stay between the attacker and the net. Both players must agility skate using edges.
Description:
1. Pucks are scattered in the low slot area.
2. Attacker has 15-20” to score as many goals as he can.
3. Defender has no stick and impede the shooter from scoring.
4. Count the goals.
* I think it is dangerous to step on pucks and fall. Another option that adds the skills of passing, receiving, shooting off a pass is to have a passer on each side and up top or high slot and behind net who feed the shooter when he makes eye contact.

Story Time:
I have seen some really bad injuries from stepping on pucks. i.e. Jerome Iginla was working on skills with Tomas Pacina and I was going on next to work with a player. Jerome was taking a lot of shots while skating and stepped on a puck in the slot, crashed into the boards and was injured through training camp and the start of the season.
Another example. I taught my college hockey class and no one was on the ice after us. A student says; 'Tom is it ok if I shoot around a little by myself.' I said OK. He went out by himself, shot and missed the net, stepped on the puck when it bounced off the boards, fell and crashed into the boards and broke his wrist.
So the theme is to foresee danger as a coach and create a safer environment. I gotta say I didn't see any danger in one skater, one puck.
Last year a former NHL player, coach who I play in the mornings with forgot to take off his skate gaurds. He fell and detached his retina. So uncontrolled falls are really dangerous.
End of stories for today.
