I have used some of this video before but the focus here is to show how the Russians constantly move, go from high to low, go from side to side below the goal line and rotate side to side at the point. There is zero standing still and one timer passes and shots are the focus. The constant moving and changing the point of attack creates seams for passes for one timers and back door plays. I have watched hundreds of power play practices with pro and U20 teams around the world and this is the best I have watched. Overload to 1-3-1 diamond to spread to slot set. Point of attack high, low, point. It takes great skill to be able to one touch and skate head up with the puck but if you can do it scoring chances are created constantly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T2 - 5-4 PP - Russian U20

Key Points:

Either the puck or the player moves and they continually switch positions low and at the point and change the point of attack low by skating behind the net. Pass low to get the pk to ‘Stare’ and sneak into a seam behind for a one timer. I watched them play an ex game and they scored with the low spread with a pass and one timer. Never stand still with the puck.

Description:

1. 5-4 in one end.
2. Start with an overload.
3. Rotate into a diamond 1-3-1.
4. Pass low and the player move behind the net for a low diamond 1-3-1.
5. Sometimes rotate into a low 2-1-2 spread with two attackers below the goal line.
6. Mostly left handed shots so one timers are from the goalies left side.
7. Player on the hash always has an easy outlet to the point or below the goal line.
8. Constant movement side to side with points sneaking in for a one timer.
9. D skate one side to the other with the puck and switch sides.
10. Tap to the middle player who can shoot or pass to anyone.
11. Continually go side to side to change the point of attack and spread the PK.

* Mostly one touch passes and lateral skating looking for one timer shots.

Jasper Hockey Camp

For the last many years Jasper Minor Hockey has brought Gaston and I up to do a 3 days camp. The last five years my son Jim has come as well. Two groups 5-8 and 9-15 with a mix of girl's and boy's. The young ones get on hour of skating with Gaston and one of hockey with me and Jim. The older ones get one hour of skating and 75 minutes of hockey per day. It is a beautiful drive up. Good highway driving to Lake Louise then 225 km. up highway 93 of an ice covered mountain pass with cliffs on both sides.

The description below is for the game organization and the first video is about the whole camp and not just the games and shows skating and puck handling and the little guys playing hand hockey between the skating and hockey sessions.
the other three video show the players doing the skating warm up with Gaston, young group playing a King's Court tournament and the older group doing a battle game of 1 vs. 1 vs. 1.

I love the place, the people and doing this camp.

-------------------------------------------------------------
D - Game Organization for the Jasper Camp

Key Points:

Play 3 cross ice games at once. Six one net games at once, two nets on each goal line. Combine the way you use the nets. Basic principle is the larger the team the more group activity and the smaller the team the more individual activity.

Description:

1 - Cross ice one net games, two pass, bounce off boards or pass to resting teammate.
2 - Puck or different balls at each game. Switch balls every 5 minutes.
3 - Passing rules, 2-3 passes, 2" with puck, one touch, only forehand, backhand, saucer.
4 - You must make an escape move before a pass or shot, only one pass allowed.
5 – The older group played 8-8 full ice with the rule there must be at least one pass in each zone.

This video shows the little kid's playing, the older group skating and the 5-8 year olds on the ice doing puck handling and games.

1. Coach shoot the puck in and forecheck.
2. D1-D2-F1-F2 breakout together towards D3-D4.

5. The second coach shoot a puck into the other end and forecheck.
6. D3-D4 read the pressure and breakout with F3-F4.
7. Regroup with D5-D6 or D2-D5 if only 6 D.

I started studying International Hockey in 1977 when George Kingston brought in international coaches to do a two week 40 hour course each July at the U of Calgary. He organized it during Stampede Week so these coaches could experience the Western Canadian culture. George was the coach of the university men's team and Dean of PE. He spent a year traveling around the world and staying in places like Russia to study the international game and then moved on to the NHL as an assistant and then co-head coach of San Jose with Bob Murdoch. I attended during all nine summers the course was held.

This week I am going to put together forum posting featuring drills and games from various countries to compare coaching styles. Yesterday was women's hockey and today Finland. The subject fits with the site as our first book is 'Hockey Coaching The ABC's of International Hockey. I have also been lucky enough to go to Finland to present, run hockey schools, go to seminars and visit my good friend and IIHF Hall of Famer Juhani Wahlsten.

The pdf. at the bottom has links that you can click on to open the Forum postings of drills, games and articles that demonstrate the Finnish sports culture.

These practices are either done by Finnish players or run by coaches from Finland. They run excellent practices.

Comparison of practice techniques from U20 to NHL teams, to NHL prospects to European pro’s.

Most of the players in the U17 drills above were on the Finland U20 Team that just won the 2016 World Championships in the final vs. the Russian U20 team who demonstrate the drills a few postings below.

Coaches may wonder 'Why focus on a specific nations practice styles.'
The other hockey nations in the top group don't have near the amount of players that Canada and the USA have so they have to do a fantastic job of developing the players they have. Canada and the USA have about 500 000 players each. Sweden and Finland about 50 000, Russia less, the former Czechoslovakia had about 80 000 and Slava Lener who heads Czech hockey told me that combined the Czech and Slovaks have 32 000. The other countries in the top group have less than 10 000.

So they have to do a great job when they practice. As Erkka Westerlund told me years ago, 'we can't cut an 11 year old player because he is a late developer. We have to develop each player to the best of our abilities.'

I started paying attention to how other nations practice and this is an example from the Czech Republic.

Russian Practice Methods

The Russians do the best passing in practice that I have seen. Their point shot practice with switches is a key to the power play they use that switches from high to low, spread to 1-3-1 Diamond to Overload. I coached in Austria with Vladimir Jursinov who was with Tikonov during the Soviet domination of international hockey and was head coach in the 98 Olympics and a dominant figure in Russian hockey now. So a few of the drills are his but non Russian teams are doing them.

Pro Practice Methods

These practice activities done by pro teams around the hockey world. There are about 220 examples and are written up in the ABC Coaches Forum. If you click on the link it takes you to the posting which has a description, diagram and video link as well as a pdf. With all of these things that you can save if you like the practice idea.

I am not going to paste the list here because it is very long with about 230 drills and games. They are in the attached pdf. and when clicked on they take you to the Forum posting. I will also attach a list of pro drills that are only in the video section and many of them haven't been written up yet.

Comparing International Coaching Methods

Coaches,

This is a summary of the over 1000 international drills and practice activities that were posted over the last week. It was a huge project. Each drill takes at least 3 hours to prepare and post and it is a compilation or over 10 years of putting the pdf.s together. The goal is to help coaches so they can help the players 'Enjoy the Game.'

I have spent quite a bit of time the last few weeks putting together pdf.s that compare how various groups practice by putting links to the Forum postings of drills and games. Each posting has a description, diagram, video link and a pdf. that can be saved.

Most of the gold winning Finnish Jr. team were here two years ago with the U17 team that won the Mac's. The Russian U20 team is the one they played in the final last week. If you save the PDF.s at the bottom of each posting you can click on the titles to go to the drill.

Russian Practice Ideas - You Tube Video

These videos are from the 2012 and 2016 Russian U20 team practices, presentations made by Russian legendary coach Vladimir Jursinov, ‘Jursi’ running drills in Austria where I coached with him or and a few with my team doing his drills that I have no video of. There are also some video clips that have been sent to me from Kevin Sullivan. You can see the ‘joy in playing’ when Russians practice. The coaches love to play in the games and shoot around after practice. There is one clip of Datsyuk leading his teammates in some stickhandling after a Detroit practice.

T2 - 5-0 Breakout Options Routine - Russian U20

Key Points:

Coach alternate dumping the puck to each side and also rim or shoot so the goalie handles it. Practice the various breakout options. D to D, D to C, D to W, go, reverse, counter, wheel.

Description:

1. Two units of five wait near the red line to break out of each end.
2. Coach at each end shoot the puck in.
3. Unit of 5 break out using various options.
4. Pass to the coach.
5. Coach shoot the puck in and the other unit break out.
6. Continue rotating and practice the various options.

*This is a good routine to do at the start of practice to review the breakout and get everyone involved.

The drills below are examples of the North American U20 coaching style. Lots of 'command style' with the coaches very involved in all aspects of each drill. The U17 drills posted above are also from NA practices and are very coach centred. If we wonder why there is little creativity in the game now we only need to look at how we train players to be Robotic.
