C2-C6 - 2-1-Point Shot – Pro

Key Points:

Defender cut the ice in half and don’t allow the puck to cross the mid-line. If the defender slides he must be outside the posts and his skates sideway so the puck can’t get under the toes. D fake going to the puck carrier early then drop back into the middle. If they screen in a high and low stagger then D1 focus on not allowing the higher F to tip the shot. Many attackers will panic and either shoot from far out or pass right to you.
Attack with speed and make the first pass near the blue line and read the D. Crash the net for a rebound. Layer on point shot, one screen and one tip from the hash marks.

Description:

1. Line-up D along boards in middle and F in corners.
2. F1-F2 attack 2-1 vs. D1.
3. After the rush D2 follow and take a shot from the point.
4. F1-F2 screen and tip vs. D1.
5. F3-F4 attack vs. D2 after the point shot.
6. D3 follow and shoot then defend vs. F5-F6.

T - Game Transitions

Key Points:

Two even teams will be on offense about 35% of the time and on defense 35% of the time and ready to attack or defend in loose puck situations which are about 30% of a game. The team that wins the most loose puck battles spends more time on offense and usually wins the game and players need to be prepared to go on either offense or defense in loose puck situations.
Players need good offensive habits like facing the puck, stick on the ice, give a target, protect the puck, face the play, carry the puck in the triple threat position, get open. On defense always play from the defensive side, stick on the puck, stick in the lanes, mark your man, head on a swivel, tight gaps, good angles, stay in the shooting lane, etc..

Description:

Three Game Situations:

0 - Loose Puck (about 30%of the time.
1 - Team on offense (about 35% of the time)
2 - Team on defense (about 35% of the time)

Four Game Playing Roles

Offense

Role 1 - the player with the puck.
Role 2 - the players supporting the puck carrier.

Defense:
Role 3 - Closest defender checking the puck carrier using pressure or contain skills.
Role 4 - Other defenders playing man to man or zone.

This video was prepared by Kai Katajalehto a Finnish coach in the Vaasa organization.

The video clips show USA and Canada both playing Russia at the IIHF World Championships. Kai has edited the video so in the top corner a circle appears in each of the 3 situations. Green Can. USA on offense, Red on defense, Yellow a loose puck situation.

It is amazing to watch how the game constantly bounces from one situation to another. (I have added English sub titles.)

This is a video Kai did a few years ago with Detroit and Pittsburg that uses the same symbols.

To the Coaches who come to this site.

Yesterday I plugged the 32 GB with the thumb drive into my smart TV USB port and played the C - game situation drills. There are 225 of them and each lasts about 1.5 minutes, which is over 5.6 hours of drills. It was a good review for me to see a lot of things that I forgot about. I watched about 2 hours.

Hockey is the same all over the world but each country has a different way of practicing and coaching. It is interesting to watch how the Czech, Russian, Slovakian, Austrian, American, Canadian, Swiss, Swedes and Women coach. A lot of the videos are from these practices.

Coaching styles are very different. American coaches are very vocal and give lots of input during the drills, Canadians a little less. European coaches usually don't say much and may start each part of a drill with the whistle but many let the players recognize when it is time to start the next rep and don't use the whistle much.

Russians, Czechs, Finns use a lot of one touch exercises. Swedes do a lot of deliberate practice. North Americans tend to practice defense first and you learn offense playing against the defense and the Europeans are opposite and work on offense a lot more and practice defense playing against the offense.

This is a consistent theme from my 20 plus hockey trips to Europe and travel around Canada and USA. My first coaching trip to Europe was in 1985-86 season when we took a college team to play vs. pro's in Germany and Switzerland (3 ties and one loss). I started going as a guest coach in 1993 to Finland first for seminars with Juhani and Jursinov and a hockey school in Hamar, Norway and I also arranged a 3 week tour of Norway, Sweden, Finland that summer as a recruiting trip for the U of Calgary team where I was an assistant coach for Willy Desjardins. Since then there have been hockey camps in Finland, Czech Republic (2010) and Austria (coached there the 08-09 season), Korea, around the USA, Mexico and mentored the Turkish national team coach when he cam here a few years ago. So all in all lots of international experiences that gave me a chance to work with coaches from all over the hockey world and also attended 5 IIHF symposiums in Europe, the last one this summer in Prague.

I have done camps in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Wisconsin, New York, California, Boston, Michigan and got to work with many great coaches. The last one was near Boston with former NHL player/coach, Curtis Brackenbury who does a camp for college players (2013). Of course Gaston and I always do our summer camp in Jasper.

I know a lot of the European coaches who were running practices that videos are from. The Finnish U20 coach was my assistant when I was the Head Instructor for 3 summers in Vierumaki, Finland. The U17 coach works with me and Juhani on development of the ABC's. I mentored U17-U20 Czech coach in Jihlava, Czech Republic (2010). I coached with and against, Mike Johnston, with Willy Desjardins, against Mike Babcock. In Austria I coached with Pierre Page (Canadian), Reijo Routsalainen (Finland), Gene Reilly (American), Vladimir Jursinov (Russia - before Austria, I had done 3 seminars with him and Juhani Wahlsten in Finland and we presented at the Helsinki IIIHF coaching symposium together.) and against Danielle Goyette (Women's hockey). So can see there is a lot of different nationalities represented in the material on the site.

Because Hockey Canada is based in Calgary a lot of international teams come here to train at their 4 rink Winsport complex and it is a great place to get practice ideas.

There are 365 B videos with skill drills vs. no opponents, 214 A-individual skill, 200 D games, 100 DT transition games, 40 E Shootouts, 40 Fitness Skating, 25 Goaltending, 30 Off-ice, 85 T1 Teaching offensive skills, 210 T2-4 Teaching Offensive and Defensive Team Play, 25 T3 Teaching Individual Defensive Skills. (T drills are usually with pro and National teams).

Thousands or hours gathering and processing this material from around the hockey world and there are over 1600 video clips from practices that are posted in the video sections. About 1050 are in the 14 Daily Drill Forums with diagrams, descriptions and edited video.

Dwight developed this site for me to share the the ideas with other coaches, otherwise it would just be my data base. Another reason for the site is to constantly update the coaching program that Juhani Wahlsten and I prepared for the Austrian association. Everything is coded the same way.

Sorry if I am just babbling here, but the reason is to give coaches who frequent this site an idea of where the ideas come from.

The purpose is to help coaches who haven't had the same opportunities.

C3 - 2-2-Point Shot-2-2 – Pro

Key Points:

Forwards isolate a wide D and attack him 2-1. Defense switch if Forwards cross near the blue line and stay with their man if they cross inside the zone. Forwards fight to keep their sticks free and defense tie up sticks so they can’t tip shots.

Description:

1. Players line up on each side along the boards in the neutral zone.
2. Coach pass to D1 to D2 who takes a shot from the point.
3. F1-F2 circle in from the neutral zone and attack 2-2 vs. D1-D1.
4. D3-D4 follow the play.
5. On the whistle F1-F2 screen and D1-D2 battle to box out and seal their sticks to the outside.
6. Coach pass to D3 to D4 who shoots.
7. F3-F4 now circle in and attack D3-D4 in the other direction.
8. Continue this sequence.

*This drill can be done from 1 to 3 forwards an one or two defensemen.

B4 - RG-D to W Shot-Point Shot - 2-0 - 3-0 - U17

Key Points:

Attackers read to either gain the blue line if the D gives a big gap or do a wide entry if the D is tight. Create two layers when screening.

Description:

1. Players line up in the middle circle and one D and two F leave from each end.
2. Coach pass to D1 who passes up to F1 or F2.
3. Attack 3-0 at each end.
4. Coach cover one attacker at the blue line to force the attackers to make a decision.
5. Coach pass to the D1 at the point who shoots while F1-F2 screen.

* The attacker with the puck creates space by skating between the dots.

* If the D leaves a big gap then gain the blue line in the middle lane.

* If the D plays a tight gap and protects the middle then the other attacker cross and take the ice behind and get a pass in
the wide lane.

Datsyuk Puck Handling and Scoring

How to score and puck handle.[/b]

Datsyuk Dangles.

http://www.prodigy-hockey.com/highlight-videos/pavel-dangles-datsyuk-hockey-highlight-video-playlist/

Lots of thoughts about how to score in a shootout. Some conventional wisdom.

- Shoot where the goalie ain't.
- Shoot where the goalie came from and not where he is going.
- If the goalie is in deep then shoot, if he comes out then deke.

Some players like to make the goalie cover all 6 feet of the net by coming in from the side and getting him to move across the crease then find a hole.

I think the key is take what the goalie gives you. If he has a bad angle, down early, then beat him to the opening or if he/she is square then you have to make her move.

Last night Crosby went in and made a fake left, then right, then back left to get the goalie moving to his right and then shot a backhand where the goalie came from.

One of the best videos I have seen is of Datsyuk on penalty shots and breakaways. He sells a fake and then moves the puck quickly across and shoots, or he sells that he is going from backhand to forehand, slides left and then puts a backhand where the goalie came from. The most common Russian move (I have watched them practice it.) is to fake backhand to freeze the goalie and then quick to the forehand and over the stick side pad. Datsyuk does many of these in the video.
